Not many people know this, but I run an EarthBound Fanlisting. Well, earlier today, I took one look at the site's design and decided that I had to change it. It was just...wrong, on so many levels. The header/logo was cluttered (with low-quality images no less), the three boxes seemed haphazardly placed, and worst of all, it used HTML 4.01 with tables to accomplish this layout.
So I immediately set off to making a better layout. This one just sort of came together. I found an old vector PSD of the EarthBound logo, opened it in illustrator, and redid the gradient+glow. From there, I layered it on top of the globe graphic and upon seeing the result, I knew I wanted to make the globe a "static" background behind both the content and the logo.
The static background was accomplished using two separate images, one dark, one light. The dark one was set as the body background, while the light one was set as the content background. Both backgrounds, however, were set to fixed. This means that the background will always appear in the same location relative to the viewport, even when scrolling. Since both backgrounds were set to the same position, one "continues" where the other leaves off.
